Kinross Lodge Opening Soon

  “It solves a need that is needed,” said Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) President Chris Olson. And that need is housing for the hundreds of people that are currently working on the Soo Locks expansion project and hundreds more that will be in the next seven years when the project is expected to be completed. Many of the workers are staying at local hotels or campgrounds. General Aviation Construction Update

Great progress is being made on the General Aviation Building Construction. Even with the harsh winter conditions, work continues. The new building will have a modern design that will allow operation expansion as well as increase efficiency for travelers. The terminal will have a separate screening area on the first floor for international flights and passengers while they are waiting for U.S. Customs clearance into the United States. The second floor will serve as the administrative office for the CCEDC and CIU airport management. Construction is scheduled to be completed in September of 2022. Grand Opening of the LSSU Center for Freshwater Research and Education

LSSU hosted the grand opening of the new Richard and Theresa Barch Center for Freshwater Research and Education Facility. The state-of-the-art laboratories for campus constituents to conduct freshwater research, hands-on exhibits for community members to learn ways to protect natural resources, and wall-to-wall windows for uninterrupted views of the St. Marys River. The grand opening tour stops include a cutting-edge mesocosm laboratory, an experimental system in which to perform a broad range of scientific investigation spanning aquaculture to contaminants to invasive species. General Aviation Terminal Reconstruction

CHIPPEWA COUNTY — The Chippewa County International Airport is receiving over $5 million in grant funds, as announced Friday afternoon. The U.S. Department of Transportation will be awarding approximately $5,271,043 to the airport, which will be used for the reconstruction and expansion of the airport’s general aviation terminal building to improve operations and efficiency for travelers and baggage moving throughout the airport. Chippewa County International Airport completes Runway Lighting Project

Chippewa County International Airport (CIU) recently completed a runway lighting modernization project. New airfield lighting on Runway 10/28, the 5,000 foot crosswind runway, was upgraded to LED lights. This upgrade will replace the current 19 year old lighting, reduce energy costs, and minimize future maintenance. J.R. Ranck was the contractor on this project which totaled $800,000.00.
