Portland business leaders fly restored DC3 to Normandy, France for 75th Anniversary of D Day

PORTLAND, OR – On Friday morning, May 24, a group of Portland area business leaders will fly to Normandy, France, to join the celebration commemorating the 75th Anniversary of D Day, honoring the brave soldiers of that historic battle. 11 adventurous passengers and crew will make this trip in a restored DC3. And, to make this special trip even more interesting, they will follow a flight path of the actual troop carrier flights en route to D Day. On the morning of May 24, 2019, 8 passengers and 3 crew members (mechanics) depart from the Aurora Airport in a restored 1937 DC 3, owned by Pete Nickerson, on a trip commemorating the 75th Anniversary of D Day. For this memorable flight, 6 of the passengers are pilots, and 5 are also military Veterans.

The flight departs from Aurora, Oregon (about 24 miles south of Portland) early in the morning and will have stops in Montana, North Dakota, Michigan, New York, Maine, and Canada, Greenland, Iceland and Scotland before landing in Duxford, England on May 31. Michigan Aerospace Manufacturing Association discuss Potential Spaceport in Chippewa County

Gavin Brown, executive director of the Michigan Aerospace Manufacturers Association, speaks to local officials at the Chippewa County EDC about a potential Northern Michigan spaceport in Chippewa County. Chippewa County International Airport is one of five sites in Northern Michigan under consideration for the proposed spaceport. Brown plans to announce the site selection in September 2019.

CIU– Chippewa County International Airport is one of the five airports in the state being considered as a potential site for a proposed northern Michigan spaceport.

Local officials gathered Thursday at the Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation to host the Michigan Aerospace Manufacturing Association’s (MAMA) Executive Director, Mr. Gavin Brown. The purpose of the meeting was to have MAMA present the Michigan Launch Initiative, the site selection process, and the significant economic impact a spaceport would have for Chippewa County.

Chippewa County EDC Receives Economic Development Administration Technical Assistance and Planning Grant

The Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation applied for and received an Economic Development Administration Technical Assistance and Planning grant. This grant will allow the EDC to hire a professional firm to devise a planning strategy for its Air and Industrial Park in order to attract firms, generate jobs, and help identify key areas of infrastructure investment. “These grants are highly competitive and a key tool to assist the EDC in positioning itself for business attraction”, stated EDC President Chris Olson. “This project will also directly tie into the recent efforts between the City of Sault Ste. Marie EDC and the Chippewa County EDC on expansion of the existing Foreign Trade Zone, to encompass all of Chippewa County”. The recommendations provided will help identify key areas of infrastructure investment and provide professionally-prepared evidence describing the business case for the EUP.

The EDC was successful in obtaining this grant with the assistance of the Eastern Upper Peninsula Regional Planning. “This EDA planning investment is integral for economic growth in Chippewa County, as evidenced by the Transportation Logistics Strategy that the Commission recently completed, which identified a need vertical assets (buildings) for prospective development”, said CEO Jeff Hagan of the Regional Planning Commission.…
