Making Michigan a Space State

In January of this year, Michigan Aerospace Manufacturers Association (MAMA) announced that the Chippewa County EDC would be the new site for the command and control center for their new Michigan Launch Initiative (MLI). In partnership with Oakman Aerospace, the Chippewa Homestead Antenna & Mission Program (CHAMP) provides an ideal location sustained by a team of industry experts who will now begin work to make the MLI goals a reality.

CHAMP is a unique Public/Private Partnership (P3) that will support MLI vertical and horizontal launch sites in Michigan as well as fully integrate United States Government (USG), Allied, Commercial, and Academic Space mission support worldwide through innovative and cost-effective Modular Open System Architecture (MOSA) designs necessary to remain competitive in the NewSpace Era.  Expected to bring an estimated 40,000 new jobs and solidify the state’s place as a premier commercial aerospace destination, the new command and control center will enable the MLI to interface with the U.S. Department of Defense, or DOD, and other related agencies on highly sensitive and defense-related projects.

Michigan Open Full Capacity

Hurray! Michigan is finally open to full capacity. This means that masks are no longer required indoors and capacity restrictions have been lifted. Be aware that private businesses may still require you to wear a mask, social distance, and any other safety measures they may choose. Let’s be grateful for how far we have come in the past 15 months. One year ago the pandemic was in full swing and there was no end in sight. Many of us were asking, “when will this all end, when will masks no longer be a necessity”. Finally, the day has come and we have much to be grateful for and so much more to look forward to in the coming years.

Speaking of things to look forward to, local events are back! The Soo Locks Engineer Day is happening this Friday, June 25th. According to Facebook, 998 people have already responded that they are interested in attending. This will make for a busy weekend in the Sault so plan your activities well or you may be waiting in long lines.

Beginning at 9 a.m., a section of West Portage Avenue in between Ferris Street and Gov. Osbourne Boulevard will be closed off …

Eight colleges – including LSSU – bring nearly $1 billion a year to U.P.

“The U.P.’s academic sector creates family-sustaining job opportunities and incentives for people to relocate to the region. New residents purchase homes, contributing to property taxes that increase city revenues. Along with students and visiting families — especially those who travel from overseas — they spend money in restaurants, hotels, and retails outlets, keeping local businesses thriving. These institutions also play a significant role in shaping the area’s vibrant culture. With its unique mix of high-tech innovation and apple-pie downtowns, the U.P. is a magnet for intelligent, interesting people who appreciate the beautiful surroundings and active lifestyle.”
