Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation (CCEDC) Announces $10.1 Million Award for Carmeuse Drummond Island Port Infrastructure Improvements
The Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation (CCEDC) is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) has awarded $10,154,024 through the Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) to the CCEDC and Carmeuse Drummond Island in Michigan.
This funding will support vital infrastructure improvements at the Carmeuse Drummond Island facility including the construction of a new ship loader and extensive enhancements to the sea wall. Planned improvements involve the selective demolition of a sunken vessel, the installation of new water utilities, sheet piling, tie backs, mooring cells, bollards, and necessary repairs across the sea wall.
These upgrades are designed to enhance vessel loading operations while improving safety, efficiency, and the long-term reliability of the port. The investment marks a significant step forward in strengthening the infrastructure on Drummond Island, positioning it for continued economic growth and success.
“The Chippewa County EDC is excited to partner with Drummond Island Dolomite for this critical infrastructure project,” stated Chris Olson, President Chippewa County EDC. “I would like to thank The Biden administration, US Department of Transportation, Senator Peters, Congressman Bergman, State Senator Damoose, Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), EUP Regional Planning, Chippewa County Board of Commissioners, Invest UP, and many other state and local partners” stated Olson.
“First, we would like to thank the Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation for our strong partnership and continued collaboration to improve the Drummond Island Habor infrastructure. The infrastructure improvements will not only boost operational efficiency but also ensure safe working conditions and more sustainable practices. Enhancing the safety and sustainability of our harbor aligns perfectly with Carmeuse’s core values. This commitment to safety and sustainability is critical for the long-term success and positive impact of the quarry on both the local community and the environment.” stated John Abbitt, Director Operations Great Lakes regions for Carmeuse Americas.
The Carmeuse Drummond Island facility was one of thirty-one (31) improvement projects in the U.S. selected to receive funding and the only project for the state of Michigan. The selected improvement projects will strengthen supply chain reliability, create workforce development opportunities, enhance freight efficiency, lower costs, reduce emissions, and improve the safety, reliability, and resilience of our ports.
