The 4th Annual UPWard Initiative Business Plan Competition has been designed to encourage entrepreneurs to explore new ideas and start new businesses in the Upper Peninsula. Cloverland Electric partnership with MDOT on lighting

August 17, 2015 — A project on the eastern end of the Upper Peninsula is shining a spotlight on cost-saving innovations for Michigan highways. In a $175,000 Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) project, energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lighting was installed at the US-2/I-75 interchange and at the St. Ignace Welcome Center just north of the Mackinac Bridge. Work began last October, and following a winter break finished up this June. Partners help DNR stock more than 4 million walleye this year

The Department of Natural Resources today announced the totals from its annual walleye rearing pond harvest and stocking of walleye fingerlings. The DNR’s Fisheries Division and tribal partners stocked nearly 4.7 million walleye fingerlings in more than 110 water bodies located throughout Michigan this spring and summer. Walleye ponds are a critical component of the DNR’s coolwater fisheries management and have been used extensively since the mid-1970s. Enbridge Engages Michigan Tech to Monitor Straits of Mackinac

Enbridge Energy Partners LP is calling on the expertise of Michigan Technological University’s Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC) to provide real-time environmental monitoring of the water conditions in the Straits of Mackinac. Enbridge Partners is sponsoring the GLRC’s efforts to integrate another monitoring buoy into the Upper Great Lakes Observing System (UGLOS). The GLRC will deploy, operate and disseminate data from the buoy for the benefit of all who use this important waterway. USDA Announces Regional Development Assistance in Central Upper Peninsula

  EAST LANSING, Aug. 12, 2015 – U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Rural Development State Director for Michigan James J. Sen. Stabenow Legislation Targets Canadian Plans to Store Nuclear Waste on Great Lakes

Frankenmuth, MI – U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow announced legislation to require the State Department to invoke the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 and mandate that the International Joint Commission (IJC) study the risks to the Great Lakes from the proposed Canadian nuclear waste site on Lake Huron. The Stop Nuclear Waste by Our Lakes Act would also require the State Department to undertake negotiations with the Government of Canada to wait for the study results before approving any waste site located on the Great Lakes. New lights coming online Wednesday at International Bridge

The International Bridge arches will have a whole new nighttime look when the switch is thrown Wednesday evening on an energy efficient and colorful lighting upgrade. The International Bridge Authority (IBA) has replaced the white lights on top of the bridge’s three curved steel arches with colored light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. U.S. Senator Gary Peters calls for a new icebreaker.
