Gary McDowell Elected to EDC Board

General Aviation Terminal Grand Opening

Chippewa County International Airport (CIU) celebrated the grand opening of its brand new General Aviation Terminal (GA) yesterday, inviting the public and Sault Area Chamber of Commerce to check out the new two-storey facility’s conference room, fixed base operations (FBO-fueling) office, pilot lounge, passenger lobby, and international passenger area.  “This terminal is a symbol of the region, how we are growing, and continue to grow,” Chippewa County Economic Development Commission (CCEDC) President Chris Olson said. “All the infrastructure out here was built back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. CCEDC Receives $550,000 for Rail Updates

For Immediate Release: August 19, 2022 Kincheloe, MI – The Chippewa County Economic Development Corporation (CCEDC) Receives $550,000 for Rail Updates On July 1, 2022, the State of Michigan announced the approved fiscal year 2023 state budget. House Bill 5783 passed allowing funding for projects specific to Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula that would allow local roads and bridges to be updated. On July 20, 2022, Gov. General Aviation Construction Update

Great progress is being made on the General Aviation Building Construction. Even with the harsh winter conditions, work continues. The new building will have a modern design that will allow operation expansion as well as increase efficiency for travelers. The terminal will have a separate screening area on the first floor for international flights and passengers while they are waiting for U.S. Customs clearance into the United States. The second floor will serve as the administrative office for the CCEDC and CIU airport management. Construction is scheduled to be completed in September of 2022. Grand Opening of the LSSU Center for Freshwater Research and Education

LSSU hosted the grand opening of the new Richard and Theresa Barch Center for Freshwater Research and Education Facility. The state-of-the-art laboratories for campus constituents to conduct freshwater research, hands-on exhibits for community members to learn ways to protect natural resources, and wall-to-wall windows for uninterrupted views of the St. Marys River. The grand opening tour stops include a cutting-edge mesocosm laboratory, an experimental system in which to perform a broad range of scientific investigation spanning aquaculture to contaminants to invasive species.
